Cho, Dal Hyung

Dal Hyung Cho was born May 2, 1931; he is from the Republic of Korea, near the city of Gwangju. His parents were farmers in that area, and that is where Dal Hyung grew up and attended school during the period of Japanese occupation and World War Two. He fought for Republic of Korea forces during the 1950-53 war.  He trained at the infantry school, specializing in and becoming an armoured warfare officer. In that capacity he fought alongside United Nations personnel, and as a teenager he experienced frontline combat fighting in the mountainous Korean terrain. Following the ceasefire he made a career in the ROK military, staying for 20 years and rising to the rank of colonel.  During that long career he had the occasion to study in both the United States and Canada, and that helped him to make his decision to emigrate to Canada, hoping to secure a better life for his children. Dal Hyung Cho was interviewed by Scott Masters at his home in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec in July 2026.
