George Jewell was born November 16, 1944 in New Westminster, B.C., though he really grew up in Winnipeg. George’s parents divorced when he was young, and George left school early – after Grade 7. He became a telegram delivery boy at that time, and when he was 17 he planned to join the RCAF, but his mother – a Mennonite – wouldn’t give him permission. He had to wait until he was 22 to make that move. George had hoped to become a mechanic, but he was selected as a radar operator and assigned to the LaChute base on the Pine Tree Line. There wasn’t much to see there, so he became an instrument technician, moving on to bases in Kingston and Edmonton. George spent 16 years in the RCAF, and he elected to leave as he felt his children needed more stability – and fewer times changing schools! George Jewell was interviewed by Scott Masters at his home in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec in July 2026.
