Steve Sullivan was born May 19, 1943 in Montana. The son of a World War One veteran, Steve grew up in that state and eventually attended Montana State College, where he was enrolled in the ROTC program. Along the way he experienced the 50s and early 60s, including the events of the Cold War and the civil rights movement, as well as the TV and music of the day. Steve knew he’d be on his way to Vietnam eventually, and his tour of duty began in 1967. Steve served with the 57th Assault Helicopter Company, and during his time notable battles took place, such as Hill 875 and the Tet Offensive. Steve flew a gunship in those battles, supporting troops and convoys on the ground. The reality of what they witnessed in those battles made Steve and many other men question the war as 1968 dawned. Steve came home at the end of 1968 and he still had a military obligation to fulfill, and that led him to Panama for a year after his Vietnam tour of duty. After that he returned to the U.S., where he and other veterans came to terms with their overseas service. Steve Sullivan was interviewed by Crestwood students over zoom in May 2026.
